My Favorite Dog Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Pet Portrait

Since we are on the subject of dogs...............meet Bennett

sold

A client sent me a photo to work with on this piece.  The dog was such fun to paint.  I just knew that Bennett was high energy and fun loving.  Don't you agree?

The better the photo, the better the painting.

Daily Painting, Oil, Animal, Sheep, 8x10

My friend, Donna Vines, took a trip to Northern England earlier this year.  She was kind enough to share her photos with me.  I have painted several of them and I could not resist this small lamb walking the moor.

I painted with palette knife and brush and tried to get lots of texture in it.  I liked the rugged  feel.  I have never been on the moors, but I think they would feel rugged and cold and windy.

I painted a ram a few months ago, which I like to think is this lamb's daddy.  You can view it here

Have a wonderful week!

Cat Painting, Animal Portrait, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x6 Original Oil

I always enjoy painting animals, so it is no surprise, that when I hosted a photo contest, on my  facebook page, I chose a kitten, as the winner.

Purchase here

I could not resist painting this adorable kitten.  Below is the original image, sent in from Sandy, in Florida.

I asked readers, to inspire me, by sending in their favorite images.  The winner received a giclee print of the finished painting.

I had so much fun, that I am thinking of holding this contest monthly.  Check out my facebook page,
Carol Schiff Studio, and join in the fun.

Giclee Print on Sale, Wildlife Art Print, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Playful Otter" by Carol Schiff, 12x16x.75" Art Print

Otters are one of those cute little animals that we all love to feel have human characteristics.  The way they float on their backs, using their bellies for  a table.  I once read they link paws when they sleep, so they will not float away from each other.

Swan Oil Painting, Daily Painting, "Swan Reflections" by Carol Schiff, 16x20x.75 Oil

On most mornings, I take a walk around the neighborhood.  Everyday, I would pass this beautiful creature and his mate, gliding across the water of a small pond.  When I saw the photograph I was able to take, I knew I would want to paint it.

I painted with brush and palette knife and was able to obtain a nicely textured surface to indicate the water.
The background, which was difficult to photograph correctly, is a mixture of a rich brown and a greenish dark.

I have done several paintings using the reference images I took that day.  One is a 11x14 pastel and one is a 6x8 oil.  I am glad I had my camera that day because the birds are gone now.  I like to think they just flew away.

Thank you for viewing my daily painting today.   I hope you will pin it!

Spring in the Mountains

We have just returned home from a few weeks in the mountains of western North Carolina.  Earlier this year, we sold our second home there and replaced it with a condo in Waynesville.  We have been working hard, getting moved into the condo, painting every wall in sight and making it feel like home.

One afternoon I grabbed my camera and ran outside to capture the beautiful spring day and this is what I found.

I inherited a garden in front of our new home, and everything was coming alive at once...

Fiddleheads were popping up

Dogwood was blooming everywhere I looked in both pink.....

and white blossoms.  Tulips, lilac and azalea were everywhere and the dats were filled with the music of songbirds.

A drive to WaterRock Knob, off the Blue Ridge Parkway, showed less color at the higher elevation, but still beautiful to see.

For an Ohio girl, who has spent most of the last 50 years in Florida, it seemed all my memories of spring were spread out before my eyes.  Don't get me wrong, I truly love living in Florida, but when spring or fall calls, I head to the mountains.

Stay tuned, to see these images interpreted in oil.

Thanks for stopping by today.

Daily Painting, "Bunny", 6x8, Oil sold

My youngest grandson was visiting our home when he spied this rabbit in our yard.  He and his Mom are really big animal lovers.

NFS

So, when we found this rabbit, I grabbed the camera and got out of the way.  Trevor managed to get a very nice shot of it through the window.

He was very excited when I surprised him with this little painting, and today, it hangs in a place of honor in his bedroom.

Cow Painting, Daily Painting, "Bovine Portrait" by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil on Linen

A client wanted a cow painting, for licensing purposes.  I usually do daily painting of still life or landscape, but I have to admit I enjoyed both the horse, they originally chose,  and this cow painting.

I painted on Senso linen canvas.  I had a pad of the linen around for several years but didn't really know what to do with it.  I found it had a different texture than the cotton canvas I usually paint on, but once I got into the painting, it was fine.

My next problem was what to do with this unstretched painting.  After surveying several friends, I mounted it on a cradled wood panel.  I was told the perfect glue to use is YES GLUE available at craft stores.  I had some in my stash and I have to say it worked like a charm.  Then I trimmed the edges with a exacto knife and it turned out perfectly.  Now I can use the rest of my Senso linen canvas with no fear!

So, today I stretched my limits, both with the Senso canvas and the cow painting, and luckily both worked out for me!

THOMPSON GAZELLE

This is one of my early efforts in oil. Our local zoo was opening an African exhibit. They contacted several local artists and assigned specific animals that were represented in the exhibit to each artist. They then created signs for the exhibition area, featuring the image and relaying information about the species represented. I was happy to donate to the zoo and still get a thrill when I visit and see "my sign".

Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Two Black Ducks" by Carol Schff, 6x8" Oil SOLD

A client wanted a large commissioned piece of her family's pet ducks.  There were lots of ducks...and they all were black.

SOLD
I did this small study of two of the ducks....feeling my way around and trying to decide how to do the larger piece.

The client was happy with the study and I proceeded with the commissioned piece which is shown below.  The reference photo had dark ducks and dark background.  She also wanted to include two ducks that had gone to ducky heaven.  Below is the finished palette knife piece.

Hope your day is just ducky!
