Dog Portrait, Daily Painting, "Ruby's Nap". 16x20x1.5 Oil on Canvas, SOLD

Well, here I am posting another dog portrait.  There is good reason for that.  I have been working on several commissions for the same gentleman.  He loves his dogs and wanted oils of them.

This is Ruby, enjoying a little shut eye on the porch.  We all love to do that, right?

Pelican Painting, Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 9x12" Original Art

We spent a lovely afternoon at Pt Canaveral recently.  Of course, we were surrounded by birds.

I was inspired by this pelican, hunkered down on a piling.

Purchase here
I realized that many of the paintings, that give me the most joy, are birds.  I am committed to painting more of them.

The biggest block is getting good photos to work from.

I want to share some of my other photos from this trip to Pt. Canaveral.

As you can see, it was a wonderful day.  Grandson came along, making it even more special!

Wildlife Painting, Snowy Egret Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" Original Painting

We are very lucky to live close to one of the best "birding" areas in the US.  Viera Wetlands, here in Brevard County is well knowing in "birding circles" and each year, thousands of birders descend on us.

Purchase here

I find it impossible to get accurate colors on a painting that has a variety of blues.  The image above is a scan of the actual painting, with very accurate color.

After taking 5-6 photos, in different lighting, this is the best I could do with a camera.  As you can see, the colors are harsh and inaccurate.  This image has been photo shopped to the best of my abilities.

Why do I care about photos?  Why not just scan them?

Much of my work is licensed and the scan does not make a large enough file for me to send to my licensee. For that reason, I continue to try to find a way to take a decent photo!  If any of you have an answer for me, I would appreciate the help!

Thanks for reading my blog today.

I was looking back through my sales for the end of the year, and thought I would post some original paintings that have sold.

It is easy to spot a trend with sales of prints, but not so much for originals.

Angelfish Oil Painting, Wildlife Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting "Angels on Parade, 8x16x.75" Oil

I am still reliving memories of my trip to the coral reefs off Key Largo last summer.  Today's painting  is inspired by that trip.

Purchase here
Something great happened with this painting......I really liked it!!  I love the texture, the hues, just about everything.  I guess I shouldn't be saying that about my own work, but I do!

I really enjoyed painting this piece and I think it shows.  I think it is important that an artist expresses their feelings in their work and I feel I was able to do that with this piece.  I was not trying to replicate an image, or colors, or even a composition.  I admit I was thinking about a companion piece to the one below.

Purchase here
It was a really good feeling to create these two pieces, more or less, out of my head, and I hope to do more of this in the future.

I have one more fishy piece to show you in my next post.

Thanks for reading my blog today.

A Daily Painter Questions the BIG PLAN

Traditionally, January is when we evaluate our performance over the last twelve months, and look at the direction we are headed.

Artistically, I see nothing but question marks.  I want to have a clear plan, a path to follow and mark my progress, but alas, it evades me.

I looked through my posts from last year, and picked out my favorite pieces, hoping against hope that they will tell me where I am headed.

 Abstract Expressionism?

Maybe....

Thick Paint?

 Impressionism?

 Brushwork?
 Knife?

Really thin paint?

Or does it really matter?

All this thinking is making my head hurt!

I am happy I found this many pieces, from last year, that speak to ME.  I am happy with them which makes me happy with me.

Maybe 2017 will find me treading the straight and narrow.....but somehow, I don't think so.

Thank you all, for joining me on my crazy, unplanned journey!

Enough food for a week.........

But I'm damned if I see how the hell he can!

That is a little poem from my childhood days.  I lived in Ohio, my grandparents in Florida.  My grandmother had a postcard of a pelican that included that poem.  Florida seemed like a magical place to me then, and the poem stayed with me through the years.

Join me tomorrow for more of Pelican Week!
