Dog Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Golden Retriever Portrait, 8x8x1.5" Oil SOLD

When I first started painting I did a lot of dog portraits for clients.  Slowly, I moved into other subjects, but every once in a while, I get the urge to paint a cute canine.

SOLD
I quickly painted three unique, special puppies, before the urge passed.  This is Oscar.

Now, that the hectic holidays are over, it feels good to get back to my daily rountine.

I love the feel of a brand new year, that same feeling I get when I put on a new dress for the first time.  It stretches ahead of me with endless possibilities.  My goals this year are to concentrate more on quality and less on quanity, so posts may be fewer and farther apart.

What are your art goals for the beautiful year ahead?

Old English Sheepdog Painting, Pet Portrait, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 8x8x1.5" Oil by CarolSchiffStudio

I always loved a good shaggy dog story...so naturally I had to paint this one.

I found it a little difficult to get the sketching correct as this guy is all fur.  Thanks to my friend, Ted Fuhrer, for allowing me to use another of his fine photographic images.

I put a few impasto details in the face.

This image is also avaiable as a giclee print in several sizes here.

Dog Painting, Pet Portrait, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 8x10" Oil Painting, SOLD

Today's post features a commission I was asked to do.  My customer wanted a large print of the family pet to give as a gift to her daughter.  She sent me several images of her dog Bennett.

Of course, I could not do a print, without an original painting, so we decided on a 8x10" oil.

SOLD

She chose what I considered the worst image.  She wanted a horizontal painting and the image was vertical.  She didn't want the background to be too strong and in the image, the right eye of the dog was in such deep shadow, it was practically invisible.  But........she felt this image captured the spirit of her pet.  We made it work!

She was thrilled with the final image and now she owns the original and her daughter has the large print.

Commissions can often be difficult.  It is hard to get in the head of your client, and translate their expectations to canvas and paint.  When it happens...it's a thing of beauty!

Art and Fashion

Several  months ago, I was contacted by an Israeli fashion designer, Assaf Pelleg.  He was designing his 2017 Spring/Summer Line, and wanted to use one of my paintings in his work.  I agreed to work with him, and we found two of my artworks that were of interest to him.

For several months, I heard nothing!  Then, suddenly, an email with the completed designs.

I am thrilled with the results!

This is the fun part of what I do.  I sometimes struggle for days, over a specific artwork.  Just this week, I have worked on a piece for 3 days, and scrapped it this morning!  Then there are the boring hours, after hours, of internet work.  Taking photos, editing them, posting them.  Sometimes it seems the reward, is not enough to justify the effort.

But then, one day, a painting effortlessly falls off my brush, or a student sends me his power point presentation about how he was influenced by my art, or someone on the other side of the world, likes my work enough to place it in his collection.

That is the payoff!

Wildlife Painting, Bird Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 8x6" Oil SOLD

It gets tricky trying to photograph wildlife.  This time I got lucky.  This Great Blue Heron was very calm as I walked very close to him and started clicking away.  He had his eye on the fishermen's catch and was willing to put up with me.

SOLD

I have been working hard on color interaction and am pleased with the color on this work.

I found this guy sitting under the causeway one morning, looking for lunch or maybe just passing time.

It was a hot day and the sun was sparkling on the water.  I was on his shadow side, which gave him a glowing frame.  I painted the water with a palette knife.
