I have always wanted to paint a rooster.  Those colorful feathers are just too appealing.

I was in the zone with this one, slinging paint everywhere.........some days I just feel like the more paint the better!

Now, can we talk, blogger to blogger?  I have gotten myself involved in so many websites, that I hardly have time to paint these days.  I have really stepped up posts on several facebook accounts too.  When I have a new painting, I post it on Etsy, Daily Painter's Gallery, Daily Paintworks, CFAI, several places on facebook, maybe on Pinterest. etc.  As a result, I never get around to the blogs I liked to read every morning.  I have found many of my blogger friends on facebook.  It is so much faster to make a quick comment there.  Am I the only one with this problem?  Are you posting and commenting less now than in the past?  I really would like some input on how others handle this issue.

Painted with a palette knife and a technique I have developed which i like to call Color Weaving.  It gives lots of texture to the painting.

It is very interesting to see which direction you painting goes over the years. I recently read about a man who took a photo of his daughter every week of her life.  Now he has a unique record. I think I will take a cue from him and  paint this again in a few years.

Now, that the hectic holidays are over, it feels good to get back to my daily rountine.

I love the feel of a brand new year, that same feeling I get when I put on a new dress for the first time.  It stretches ahead of me with endless possibilities.  My goals this year are to concentrate more on quality and less on quanity, so posts may be fewer and farther apart.

Horse Portrait, "Big Red" 6x8" Oi, SOLD

I have been trying to expand my horizons by painting new subject matter.  This is my second horse painting.

I have to say I did enjoy the challenge.  He looked so spirited and I got excited about his red coat against a green background.

It's always fun to stretch a little, try something new.  I would like to do more of these, but I think my biggest challenge will be getting interesting reference images to work from. We have plenty of horses in our neighborhood, but they usually run to the other end of the pasture when they see me approach with my trusty camera.

Do you have any special techniques for getting images of animals?

The three birds in today's daily painting look a little goofy to me.  Maybe they are hungry, or maybe they are plotting against another, but I just don't trust them.

 They remind me of my childhood and the notorious "Three Stooges", Larry, Moe and Curly.
You remember them don't you?  They were always getting into trouble.

They are looking at a fourth seagull....not in this painting, and I don't think it is in a friendly manner!  I hope to do a second painting of this group, including the fourth member.

The reference photo was shared from Shelley Smart at her wonderful blog here.  Shelley is a fantastic photographer and generous too.  She gave me permission to use her image years ago.  I hope you will visit her interesting blog, "A Year at the Beach", where she recorded the activity on the beach every day.

Horse Portrait, "The Mare" 6x8" Daily Painting SOLD

Our neighborhood is not really rural, but we do have horses living in the area.

This one is very friendly and often comes over to greet me as I walk by her pasture.  She was even kind enough to pose for a photo.

I am always looking for new subject matter, so I decided to give horses a try.  This is my first attempt.  Since, I have done one more.  I enjoyed painting them, but do have a difficult time getting interesting photos of them.  Sometimes, I think becoming a photographer is a prerequisite to becoming an artist.  Some would say the trick is to sketch, sketch, sketch to know your subject well and paint from your sketches.  A valid point, but I prefer to use my limited time painting, so, I look to all the advantages modern technology has given us to work with.

Don't you think otters are just the cutest things on earth?  I love the way they swim on their backs.  The only thing I don't love is when they catch the baby ducks and chow down...but that is nature!

 The client was asking for three paintings of his two dogs.  One of each, and one of both animals.

This is the first painting.  I always second guessing myself when I work on a commission.  Does the client want this, or do that want that.  Is it too dull for them, or too bright, or too much detail, or not enough.  It is hard guessing what a perfect stranger would like!

Add to that the dreaded deadline!  In this case, I had only a short time to complete the artwork, due to my schedule.  What if I failed and produce a suitable painting in the allotted time?

While commissions are stressful for me, I always welcome them.....I just have to remeber the sense of accomplishment I have, when the project is accepted by the client.

I believe a little stretch is good for everyone, especially us artists

When I am happy with the just the right cups and saucers and teapot , I turn it over to my hubby who carefully drills holes in each piece and wires the lamp with brand new electrical parts.  He spent weeks perfecting the electrical components design for safety and durability.
